The Connection Between Hand Health and Overall Well-being

Day to day we rely on our hands to type on a keyboard, to make meals or even to help us walk however often we don’t think about our hands when it comes to health and wellness. Your hand health has a profound impact on your overall sense of wellbeing, not just function. If there are opportunities to improve the mental health, physical health, as well as emotional health by improving hand health, that should be understood and prioritized.

Why Hand Health Matters

The hands have many bones, many muscles, many tendons, many nerves, and many blood vessels. This specificity and strength comes at a cost of injury and strain because of their complexity. Hands that are healthy give a measure of (emotional) independence and contribute to productivity and emotional connection because they often are the means to express care and affection.

Taking care of one’s hands can quickly turn into a focus on eliminating pain, which can quickly grow into a condition of neglect with carpal tunnel syndrome, arthritis, or repetitive strain injury, requiring a lot of quality of life.

Mindfulness Practices: Finger yoga, aka hand mudras, as well as physical movement can help align mental focus and body action, helping to solidify mindfulness and lessen stress.

Hand Reflexology: A Path to Holistic Wellness

Somebody who practices reflexology will map out specific points on the hands, which are connected to different organs and systems of the body. Most of these pressure points can be massaged to stimulate healing, release tension and help improve blood circulation. For example:

  • The fingers are thought to correspond to the brain and sinuses.
  • Breathing issues and stress may be relieved by the base of the thumb.

Proper massage helps to stimulate the center of the palm and bring it into contact with the digestive system so as to maintain gut health.
