Before his death, Jung said to his disciples, “Don’t ever think about changing others!” Changing others often backfires, but changing yourself can lead to fulfilling your own desires.
In fact, changing others is difficult, but changing yourself is even harder. As the saying goes: “People may understand the universe, but not themselves. The self is farther away than any planet.” No matter what, since we are the protagonists of our own lives, and life only happens once, it is destined that we should treat ourselves kindly and responsibly.
So, how should we treat our own lives with kindness and responsibility? We should wake ourselves up, understand ourselves, change ourselves, fulfill ourselves, and let go of ourselves—living as our true selves.
You can cultivate inner peace through meditation. We sincerely recommend you to check our ebook In this book, you may can look for the right answer.
After reaching adulthood, we begin to realize that the world around us comes with more pressure and less nagging. The pressure arises from the fact that we must take responsibility for our own survival—our food, shelter, and life. The absence of nagging happens because people around us gradually believe that we have grown up and must depend on ourselves. We once thought we could go it alone, free and easy, but when your family really gives you freedom, you can’t even manage to get three meals a day. It’s only when you are starving that you understand the harshness of reality.
We must admit that many people, who once dreamed of a life of freedom, find that when they actually live alone, they experience loneliness, boredom, and pain. There are no old friends by your side, and the empty rented room is just you alone. Every day, you hold your phone, scrolling through endless videos, laughing and crying at the same time. You don’t know whether you are lonely or numb. In the end, you realize you never thought you would live this way. As time goes by, you start to feel like you’re floating, like a frog sleeping at the bottom of a well, the darkness pressing down on you and making it hard to breathe.
At this point, you need to be awakened. Whitman said, “Always face the sunshine, and the shadows will be left behind.” Whether life is good or not, only you truly know. The one person who can wake you up is always yourself.
We often think we know ourselves the best, but in reality, that’s not always true. Many times, we are merely slaves to our “selves,” following what it demands without thinking, judging, or refusing. People often deceive themselves. Like the frog at the bottom of the well, it believes it has gotten used to the cool and safe life in the well, always telling itself that the outside world is too dangerous, the heat unbearable.
Calm down and don’t listen easily to the voice in your head. Understand the nature and laws of how things develop. One day, you will realize that those who think they know everything are only seeing things through a fog in this shallow world. Those who truly understand themselves are the ones who can find their worth and unlock their unique potential.
A person can only fulfill themselves after changing themselves. Understanding yourself is simply about realizing that change is necessary.
Changing yourself is never something that can be done by merely talking about it. This is why most people, despite knowing they are unhappy, lost, or unclear about their direction, still won’t change. These people lack determination; after a few days of trying, they see no results and lose motivation. They lose interest, lose drive, and lose hope, opting instead to rethink their direction.
At night, you lie in bed imagining that your life will soon change dramatically. The more you think about it, the more excited you become, as if success is just around the corner. But the next day, everything is still the same, and you are stuck in yesterday’s routine.
Kugman said, “People with grand visions do not notice the small things, while those with narrow views can clearly see what’s right in front of them.” People may have only a fleeting passion for what they do, but they often remain anxious, worrying about how to quickly achieve success.
If you keep spending your precious time and energy on things that don’t matter, how can you expect to achieve what’s important? Let go of the obsession with success, and reduce your focus on irrelevant things. This will allow you to truly settle your mind and focus on doing what’s important. Always look for the reason, opportunity, and possibility within yourself. Over time, you will realize that there is no problem you cannot solve.
As Feuerbach said, “The problems that theory cannot solve, practice will solve for you.” When you take initiative, practice, become independent, and become stronger, the world will make way for you. If you are incompetent and still like to make excuses, even if the world makes way for you, you won’t get far. Only by actively changing and improving yourself can you fulfill your potential.
I saw this question online: “What is the ultimate goal of being disciplined and working hard every day?”
A highly praised answer said, “Because you have to choose a consistent way of living, you have to give your life meaning, and you have to tell yourself, ‘I have to do something.’”
I wholeheartedly agree. You have to do something to truly know what you want. You must first change yourself in order to know how to fulfill yourself.
Everyone has their own unique strengths and weaknesses.
Often, the reason people can’t change or fulfill themselves is that they focus solely on their weaknesses. You must understand that no one is perfect, just as no two leaves are exactly the same.
Similarly, if you only focus on your weaknesses, there is no space or time for your strengths to shine. If you spend all your time and energy pointing out your own flaws, how can you unleash your potential and display your talents?
One of the signs of maturity is knowing how to confidently use your strengths and generously accept your weaknesses. Embrace both your flaws and strengths equally, and life will not be dull. Instead, it will shine brightly because of that acceptance.
Accept your shortcomings, understand your limitations, let go of your weaknesses, and live your strengths.
As Hölderlin said, “Man should dwell poetically on the earth; even in dangerous places, the power to save grows.” Every life deserves to be treated with kindness, and everyone should be compassionate with themselves, especially when facing difficulties. Give yourself a warm embrace, not for any other reason, but to encourage yourself to live more powerfully.
It’s like coming back from the vast and dangerous ocean to a quiet and warm lakeside home. The family, waiting and longing for your return, doesn’t expect anything more than to see you healthy and safe.
Return to the land where you grow, steady, warm, and free, like the warmth and beauty of a dream. When you let go of the past and live in the present, you will have also let go of yourself and lived as your true self—peacefully and contentedly. That’s all that matters.
